Jimmy,
There's a bunch of related posts for your reading (and finding) pleasure. Here's what I'd recommend:
1. If the bike is going to sit for a while, put some Sta-Bil in the tank and run it a while so the Sta-bil gets into the carb.
2. If the bike is going to sit for a real long while, do the above, then top it off to leave the smallest room possible for condensation to appear. (I try to keep the bike topped off when it is cold out anyway).
3. Run some carb cleaner through it when you first start her up after a while. Try to take it on a long ride that burns through a whole tankful of gas. And try to "open it up" as much as possible to force max fuel through all the narrow areas.
4. You can always tear down the carb and clean it that way to ensure it is good.
5. Look into your tank for any rust or dirt floating around in there (you can also pull the carb float-bowl to see if anything is getting down that far.)
5. You can also pull your petcock and make sure it is clean.
